- Spirit of the Cattail -
The Cattail is important to the wellbeing of their ecosystems. They provide shelter and food both above and below the water. Their roots are tasty treats to beavers and muskrats. For generations, cattail stalks have been harvested and used for their elasticity and strength when woven. Broad leaf and southern cattail is native to turtle island, while narrow-leaf is considered non-native, and can be invasive.

The Wetlands of this territory are vital to the health and well-being of so many. They are crucial to the functioning of our waterways. More importantly, they are home to millions of species. Among them, over seven thousand plant species. Here in 'Ottawa', many Wetland areas are under threat of being paved over to accommodate housing.
