Artwork by Emily Marie Séguin

Beaded Jewelry - Resin Jewelry - Mixed Media Artwork

Emily is a multimedia artist, performer and musician. They are a queer artist of settler and Anishinabe descent (on their father's side, Mattawa), creating work to honor those who walked before them, and to uplift those who will after.

They were born and primarily work on the stolen, occupied territory of the Anishinabe Nation, “Ottawa” (and surrounding areas).

INTRODUCING...

BIRCH BARK BUTTERFLIES

Butterflies float on the air - as light as a feather or strips of paper - I've loved painting on Birch Bark for many years and creating Butterflies brings me so much joy.

These pieces are hand-painted, and crafted from repurposed Birch Bark after Canoe building.
Currently only available at the Metcalf Market on August 24th and September 7th.

These pieces and their conception is original. Crafted since May 2024.

Land Back

Artwork by Emily Marie Seguin is based on Anishinabe territory, known to some as ‘Ottawa’. The Anishinabe Nation are the caretakers of this territory, and have been since time immemorial. This city is stolen Land. Land back.

It is our collective responsibility to actively engage in efforts that reaffirm the sovereignty and right to self-determination for every community whose territories are occupied.

Land back reaffirms the right of sovereign First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities to decide what happens on their territory, according to their tradition and traditional governance practices.

It is our responsibility to learn about the Land that we’re occupying and Her caretakers, by supporting local grassroots organizations, Land and Water Defenders. It is our responsibility to consider our impact and our relationship to this territory.

Defend the sacred. Land back.

Previously featured at the Mississippi Mills public library and the shaw center

THE LIVING GALLERY

Every being on the Land is living and has Spirit - People, Animals, Fish, Birds, Bugs, Trees, Plants, Stones, Water. We are all related, and we have a duty of care for each other.

A multi-generational duo, Emily Marie Séguin and their father Maurice E. Séguin are humbled to present The Living Gallery, created to encourage folks of all ages to “go out and experience the Land”. They hope that reminding folks of their connection to the Land will inspire action.

Combining prints of Maurice’s painted works with Emily’s pressed floral pieces and beaded designs, these artists intend to inspire a return to the Land and an eagerness to learn from Her.  More than ever before, it is crucial to engage in conservation and preservation efforts for current and future generations, and to advocate and act for the well-being of the Land.

Resin

*While Supplies Last*
These resin pieces are often inspired by the land and Her inhabitants. They feature dried flowers, birchbark, moss, and other hand-picked, sustainably harvested materials.

Every piece is unique as kinds of flowers vary with the seasons.

Supplies are limited until I source a sustainable, biodegradable epoxy before I continue my work.

Antler, Fur & Leather

Much like the bark in some of these works, I gather antler pieces in the bush or receive them as gifts to re-purpose.

All leather and fur comes from trade with community, my own tanning or re-purposed clothing.

Birch bark and cedar

Crafting materiels

Birch bark and Cedar wood are two components that make up a birch bark canoe. These curls and bark pieces are a by-product of the building process and are saved for later use. These were collected as we were trimming/refining the wood.

Each curl is unique, like the stripes on the bark.

Photography

In honour of you

In honour of the keepers of the Land; the animals, the birds, the bugs and insects, the mushrooms and mycellium that maintain all life, the waters that are very alive and are the blood of the earth -

This collection features photographs taken by Emily M. Seguin (all rights reserved) and are shown to remind all of us of the beauty and necessity of these living beings; the necessity to walk gently in their homes - These beings are intimately tied to the Land and carry those same rights to clean water, bountiful harvests and a safe home.
